1. Gordons Pond Trail 

The Gordons Pond Trail is a one-way trail around 3 miles long that hugs the pond and provides breathtaking views and scenic overlooks. This trail is the perfect choice for a peaceful walk or spending the afternoon bird watching. Follow the trail to an elevated boardwalk that sits above the salt marshes at the beach's end. 

The trail is accessible from the Rehoboth parking area or the Lewes parking area. Featuring beautiful landscapes and views, the Gordons Pond Trail curls around the western side of Gordons Pond, a beautiful salt lagoon. Along the boardwalk of Gordons Pond Trail, you can look out to the salt marsh or the stunning beach views. 

2. WWII Observation Tower 

The observation tower was originally designed to be a fire control tower used during World War II. Visitors can now go to the observation tower's top to get a stunning view of the entire park. During WWII, these towers played a key role in protecting East Coast ports from potential attacks.

Along with getting a memorable view of the park, you'll also learn more about the local history and explore the architecture of the building. The observation tower provides one of the best views throughout the park and is an ideal way to spend a day in the outdoors.

3. Fort Miles Historical Area

The Fort Miles Historical Area includes the Fort Miles Artillery Park, six barracks and the Fort Miles Museum. During the Second World War, there were over 2,500 soldiers stationed at these barracks defending and protecting important waterways. The Fort Miles Historical Area sits where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Taking a self-guided tour of the area allows you and your friends or family to explore its rich history and learn more about the coastal defense operations during World War II. During your visit to the Fort Miles Historical Area, you can stop by the Fort Miles Museum underground in Battery 519. The Fort Miles Museum features unique coastal defense operation exhibits and provides a unique look into the soldiers' daily lives and civilians stationed at Fort Miles during World War II.

4. The Point 

The Point is where the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Take in the sunset or admire the view from the bayside or oceanside. With depths over 50 feet, The Point is a unique place to take in the gorgeous scenery of the waterways. Keep in mind that The Point closes each summer to benefit endangered and threatened beach nesters during the beach-nesting season.

5. Seaside Nature Center

Learn more about the local fish and marine organisms at the Seaside Nature Center. The Seaside Nature Center offers an immersive experience with exhibits and attractions on local marine life, including a touch tank. The touch tank has over 5,000 gallons of water and features whelks, horseshoe crabs and many other forms of local marine life, which younger and older visitors alike will love to see up close. 

Knowledge guides and naturalists can teach you more about marine organisms and local marine life during your visit. The Seaside Nature Center also offers unique events, including seeing the bay activity, allowing you to admire the beauty of natural marine life living in the bay.

6. Walking Dunes Trail 

The Walking Dunes Trail is a 2.6-mile loop trail at Cape Henlopen State Park near Lewes, Delaware. This picturesque trail offers beautiful views of nature and is a hike suitable for all skill levels. Accessible year-round, the Walking Dunes Trail goes through impressive sand dunes that offer one-of-a-kind views. 

During blooming season, the Walking Dunes Trail is full of lovely flowers and plants that complement the beauty of the scenery. 7. The Fishing Pier

The Hawk Watch offers an elevated vantage point for scenic views and the opportunity to watch the natural birdlife around the bay area. In addition to bird-watching, Hawk Watch's elevated view is ideal for looking for dolphins and other marine life. If you are hoping to see dolphins, try visiting the Hawk Watch in the morning or at dusk.

Biking in the State Park

Cape Henlopen State Park is a popular destination for local and tourist cyclists alike. There are 10 miles of biking trails in Cape Henlopen State Park. The trails range from easy rides on asphalt with a beautiful view of the salt marsh and dunes to more adventurous dirt trails. Biking trails at Cape Henlopen provide an unobstructed view of the Delaware Bay and the Cape Henlopen State Park, as well as easy access to seaside towns like Lewes, Delaware.

For a more relaxed, picturesque biking experience, try the Junction and Breakwater Trail. This 5.8-mile paved trail features plenty of wildlife sighting opportunities and scenic views of the old Junction and Breakwater railroad. If you're feeling adventurous, the 16-mile Regional (Grand) Loop may be right up your alley. No matter which bike trail you choose, you can be sure to get stunning photo opportunities of the sand dunes, maritime forests and salt marshes.

When biking around Cape Henlopen State Park, please be aware of bike etiquette at all times. This means being courteous of other bikers, hikers and wildlife watchers. Be sure to share the trail with other cyclists, and do not veer off the designated paths.

Camping in Cape Henlopen

Cape Henlopen State Park offers a variety of camping opportunities, from RV and tent camping to rustic cabins. The cabins feature all the amenities needed to elevate your camping experience, including electricity, air-conditioning and refrigerators. You can fit up to six people in a cabin, making it just cozy enough for the whole family. The cabins are secluded on the edge of the campground, making this the perfect evening getaway after a day of exploring the beaches, dunes and historic landmarks of the State Park.

Delaware’s public campgrounds include electric and water hookups, as well as picnic areas and beaches. The campgrounds are also home to a variety of different plant and animal species to keep the kids entertained. Be sure to review the Campground rules before leaving for your trip. Dogs are not allowed in cabins, so you’ll need to find separate accommodations for your pets. However, pets are welcome on the campgrounds and for those camping in RVs. Remember to be considerate of others, keep pets attended and dispose of litter properly.

Reservations and Rates

Cape Henlopen Campgrounds are open year-round. Exact campground rates can be found in the State Parks Brochure. However, you can expect to spend about $30 to $50 a night when camping in an RV and $70 to $130 a night if you plan on camping in the cabins. Your fees may also depend on the size of your vehicle, the location of your site and the number of people you have in your party. While no reservations are required, it is highly recommended that you make reservations as these are very popular campgrounds, specifically during the summer season. Reservations can be made 24 hours a day from the State Park’s website.

When booking a reservation, you can find more details about your spot, such as the amenities offered, the maximum number of people allowed, amenities and activities nearby. We recommend spending at least three to four days on your trip to fully experience everything Cape Henlopen has to offer.

Cape Henlopen State Park Entrance Fees

When visiting Cape Henlopen State Park, you may need to pay an entrance fee. Fees may vary depending on the time of year and the state on your vehicle registration. For example, entrance fees are generally higher during peak summer and on weekends. Entrance fees are lower for residents, those visiting on weekdays, or fall and winter visitors.

Cape Henlopen State Park offers free entrance to Delaware firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) as a way to say thank you for their continued effort to protect our communities. Check out opportunities for passes to save on your entrance fees, like the Annual Pass or Senior Lifetime Pass.

  • Restrooms: In addition to a bathhouse, there are clean restrooms available if needed on your adventure.

  • Camping: Enjoy the great outdoors with an exciting camping trip. Choose from traditional tent camping or a stay in one of the charming cabins.

  • Disc golf: Explore the disc golf course and try your hand at a round during your visit.

  • Canoe rentals: Canoe and kayak rentals are an excellent way to spend the day and adventure along the waterways.

  • Playgrounds: The playground is an exciting place for children to explore, play and have fun.

  • Picnic areas: You can also pack a picnic and enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the beautiful sights. 

  • Borrow-a-Bike program: The Borrow-a-Bike program is a project of the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park that provides free bike rentals on a first-come, first-served basis. This program allows you to borrow a bike for two hours as long as you remain in the park and only explore designated bike trails.

Events at Cape Henlopen State Park

Cape Henlopen State Park is home to various events, festivals and activities throughout the year. From the annual Great Delaware Kite Festival to monthly trail days, there are numerous events and festivals for the whole family to enjoy. 1. Great Delaware Kite Festival

The annual Great Delaware Kite Festival happens yearly in Cape Henlopen State Park. The Great Delaware Kite Festival is sponsored by the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation and the Lewes Chamber of Commerce. Spend a fun day outside with kite contests, including a children and teen kite competition, an adult kite competition and the highest kite competition. After the kite contests, there will be professional stunt kite flying demonstrations.

2. Monthly Trail Days

Monthly trail days help keep the park's trails clean, clear and safe. Each month, members of the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park get together to clean the trails up from any debris or litter. In addition to general cleaning, monthly trail days are designed to be a time for general trail maintenance and any other miscellaneous projects that may benefit the trails.

Trail days are typically held on the second Saturday of each month, depending on the weather. Monthly trail days help ensure the trails are in the best condition they can be so everyone can safely continue to explore the beautiful scenery the area has to offer.

3. Seasonal Events

You can expect many new events that pop up throughout the seasons. No matter what time of year you're visiting, there's always something new to experience at Cape Henlopen. If you're planning a trip, we recommend registering online for all events to ensure a spot for your party. Here are some yearly events to look out for:

  • Children's fantasy trail: Bringing children on your trip? Consider a spooky night of entertainment on a jack-o'-lantern-lined trail. Kids can dress up for trick-or-treating while the whole family enjoys activities from magic to music. 

  • Bird walk: Animal lovers and bird enthusiasts can enjoy discovering bird hot spots during their migration with Cape Henlopen's Bird Walk. From beginners to expert bird watchers, this event welcomes everyone to learn from the staff naturalist about the many different bird species. 

  • Cranberry bog hike: For a $5 entry fee, you and your family can search for cranberries while exploring wildlife along the Pinelands trail! This fall event begins at the Fort Miles Trail Head and is the perfect opportunity to learn some history in the midst of nature.

History of Henlopen State Park

Early Use of Cape Henlopen 

Cape Henlopen has historically been used as a public space despite only becoming an official Delaware state park in 1964. Initially, Cape Henlopen was used for the enjoyment of citizens of the Delaware Colony. The area was also a strategic location for the U.S. Army and Navy during several wars, including the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and World War I.

During World War II, Cape Henlopen was once again a vital location to defend the waterways after Fort Miles was constructed. With many bunkers, towers and watchpoints, Cape Henlopen was essential to defending the coast against potential attacks. Many of these historical buildings can still be seen today and offer a unique glimpse into the past.

In 1964, Cape Henlopen was officially named Cape Henlopen State Park and remains one of the most beautiful state parks in Delaware. Though the winters may be considered mild thanks to the state's proximity to the sea, it's always best to check the forecast ahead of your trip for snow, wind or rain. (Yes, it has been known to snow on the beach at Cape Henlopen!) 

Bring comfortable clothing and shoes that are suited to the activities you plan to enjoy. If you're camping, be sure to call ahead to find out exactly what you can and cannot bring to the campgrounds, including equipment and firewood.
